Our planet at stake:
We at Organic Attire feel very strongly that each and every one of us needs
to be conscious of our personal impact on the environment. Our beautiful home –
planet Earth – is threatened by the negative effects of human activity
polluting the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the
environment our delicate web of life depends upon. We are living at a time when we have a small
window of opportunity to repair the damage our species has wrought on this
planet and try to mitigate an environmental disaster that could make life as we
know it unlivable. And yet, our civilization is structured in such a way that
makes it difficult sometimes to “unplug” from the system and make the changes
we need to make; we want to live our lives: drive our cars, turn on power,
purchase products made in less that perfect situations and so forth. So, what can we do?
Our choices and paths:
Often choices are guided by cost; however, if everyone adapted the attitude
that our priority be the amount of good we do with our money, what a wonderful
world it would be! We can vote with our dollars and change the world.
There are so many choices we all can make. As artists and clothing creators, we
decided to use organic cotton because, even though we don’t eat it, for every
article of clothing that is made from conventionally grown cotton, a third of a
pound of carcinogenic chemicals is used and put into the environment. Why would
anyone want to do that? In addition to protecting our environment and the
people who come into contact with these toxins, it has been shown that
organically grown cotton reduces the impact on climate change: https://www.fcrn.org.uk/research-library/cool-cotton-%E2%80%93-how-reduce-climate-change-impact-world%E2%80%99s-dirtiest-crop
Additionally, we can make better personal choices. We can drive vehicles that have better gas mileage or even better, electric vehicles. We can turn off lights, support industries that are “green” (check out https://www.greenamerica.org/ - Organic Attire is a certified member of Green America) and we can make better choices in the food we consume.
We know it is not a choice everyone is willing to make but eating a plant-based diet significantly reduces one’s impact on our precious environment. There are many reasons to go vegan – health and doing no harm to other sentient beings – are two reasons why many people, including Gary and I, made the decision to eat only plant-based food. Another good reason to go plant-based, is because doing so plays a big role in reducing greenhouse gases. Here is one of many articles written on the topic: https://bioneers.org/eating-plant-based-diets-can-play-huge-role-limiting-effects-climate-change-ze0z1709/. We recommend watching these films that are all available on Netflix: What the Health. Cowspiracy, Forks Over Knives (also a great website with wonderful resources) and Game Changers – to name a few. All worth watching.
Will our actions and dollars heal or harm?
This is a continuing journey and there is always room for improvement. This is
not about making anyone right or wrong. Rather it is about considering all the
wonderful options we have and making choices that will be to the benefit of
all. I would love to hear your thoughts if you care to chime in.
Blessed be,
Janae

Wonderful blog,I will like to talk about fire prevention, how can we prevent and be ready for an emergency ,thanks ??????
Janae
Hi Sari - thanks so much for commenting. Fire prevention is something that is near and dear to all of us living in California and getting our planet on a healing course is a big piece of the puzzle. Since you are in Mendocino County, you might try getting in touch with the Mendocino County Fire Safe Council and Cal Trans to see if there are folks in your neighborhood who have started a Fire Safe or FireWise group. We started one in our neck of the woods and you would be welcome to come to our larger meetings when we have them. Also, Sherwood Firewise is doing a lot and they have a great website: www.sherwoodfirewise.org. It has a lot of resources on it.

Thanks so much for your comment and support, Kate. I think it is about realizing that money is NOT the bottom line. It needs to be about love for our planet and all beings. <3
